ARTIFICIAL ROCK CLIMBING : The concept of artificial rock climbing wall began in the U.K. in 1964. Early walls were of brick or wooden constructions, but on most modern walls, the material most often used is wooden ply or FRP panels with different shapes, sizes & colours of foot & hand holds.
Indoor climbing is an increasingly popular form of rock climbing performed on artificial rock climbing walls that attempt to mimic the experience of outdoor rock climbing, but in a more controlled environment. It provides many people of all ages & abilities, the opportunity to climb in a safe environment

COMPETITIVE SPORT: Initially, artificial rock climbing was just seen as an alternative & secondary option to natural rock climbing. However, artificial climbing has now become a competitive sport in its own right, governed by many local, national & international organizations throughout the world. In 2007, the International Olympic Committee granted the provisional recognition to the International Federation of Sports Climbing (the sports governing body), welcoming sport climbing into the Olympic movement by 2020. The first world cup was held under the auspices of UIAA in 1989. The first paraclimbing world championships (for disabled people) took place in July, 2011. In India, Artificial Rock Climbing National Competitions are held by the “Indian Mountaineering Foundation” which is the governing body for mountaineering & sport climbing. There are around 80 countries in the world today where rock climbing is popular as they have their own national governing organizations for the same.

BENEFITS OF ROCK CLIMBING
The benefits of rock climbing can be summed up into three main areas: PHYSICAL, MENTAL & SOCIAL. Artificial rock climbing is a recreational sport that is one of the world’s fastest growing sporting activities. Once thought of as a sport only for adrenaline junkies, with good instruction & modern safety equipment, it is safe & enjoyable for any age to climb at their own comfort & ability level.

PHYSICAL BENEFITS
Rock Climbing is one of the best total body workouts available. It’s a unique sport in which boys & girls are equally capable. A common misconception is that climbing requires an already strong upper body. This idea often discourages girls from participating. An effective rock climber is the one who understands that much of climbing is related to technique, balance & leg strength. Climbing develops lean, endurance muscles. It strengthens core muscles better than exercise routines to focus on that particular region. The core stabilizes the body & leads to a stronger, less injury prone body. Climbing strengthens your forearms, biceps, shoulders, neck, traps, upper back, lower back, abs, thighs & calves. Your entire body, including cardiovascular systems, benefit from rock climbing.

Rock Climbing compliments & boosts performance in other sports too. The outlet of a climbing wall will benefit the kids in so many ways. Kids don’t think about boring things like learning & exercising. They want to have fun & release energy. In a controlled environment they’ll learn how to productively channel their youthful energy. There are many instances of low muscle tone in kids nowadays than there used to be. This is because our lifestyle simply isn’t what it used to be. The fact remains that our kids are not as active as they should be. Climbing assists by developing the primary & secondary muscles needed for the
sport which benefit kids to a great extent.

MENTAL BENEFITS
Each climbing route is like a puzzle, which takes patience & planning, forcing the climber to make decisions as one gets to a spot & strategizes where to go from there. Soon one begins to visualize a route before grabbing the first hold. With practice, the climber is able to see the entire route in his mind, building his problem solving & planning abilities. Goal setting is a natural development in rock climbing. Each route has a difficulty rating usually attributed to the size of the holds & the complexity of the path. Once you’ve accomplished a route, that’s your highest grade level. The bar is automatically raised. The practice of keeping track of those projects & fitness goals helps goal setting become a habit. Once a strategy has been determined, it must be implemented to be successful. You develop the concentration & determination to follow through with your plan. The skills developed in rock climbing lend themselves to all areas of life. Nearly everything worth achieving in life requires drive, planning & execution. One of the most beneficial aspects of rock climbing is stress relief. When you’re climbing, you’re concentrating on your body movements & the goal of the summit. The real world drifts away, leaving you & gravity to duke it out. After a rigorous climbing session, your endorphins are peaked & you can get back to life with a clear head which greatly benefits in concentrating more efficiently on studies. The sense of achievement gained by reaching the summit is the most important. By achieving something which once seemed impossible, it forces the climber to realize their true abilities versus their perceived abilities, increasing confidence. When put into perspective of what has already been accomplished, anything seems impossible.

SOCIAL BENEFITS
Although the practice of rock climbing is essentially you versus yourself, it can still be regarded as a team sport, because you’re never alone (or shouldn’t be). You’ll either be climbing with a group of friends, school mates, colleagues or family. Learning to put your trust in the person holding your rope fosters relationships pretty quickly. Artificial bouldering is shorter climbing without a rope, but still requires a spotter to guide the climber to the landing mat safely. The different roles that one plays while climbing, build character & leadership skills. Every climber will get the chance to be the student & learn from others, then the teacher sharing that knowledge. One minute they’ll be the climber being supported by others encouragement or advice, then they’ll turn around & be the belayer or part of the encouraging group. The climbing community is one where every achievement is celebrated. Communication between the climber & belayer is paramount to climbing safely. The safety system consists of a series of commands or statements & recognition statements, used to inform each other of one’s status in relation to the rope & climb. (Eg. Climber to Belayer: “Slack” for more rope when climbing up, “Take” to pull rope tight & hold). Speaking clearly & listening attentively come naturally when your life depends on it. Friendship has got to be one of the best, yet unexpected advantages of becoming part of the rock climbing community.

How is rock climbing beneficial to disabled children?
Rock climbing can also be an excellent activity for children with physical or mental disabilities for a number of reasons. It has been shown to increase special perception, hand-eye co-ordination & balance. It also teaches goal-setting, communication, problem solving & planning. For children that need to overcome gross & fine motor difficulties, what can be better than giving them the opportunity to be part of a team, build friendships & develop their leadership skills in a sport that everyone can do. This is therapy disguised as play. Children & adults with cerebral palsy often have movement problems that make it difficult to walk, let alone exercise. Because of rock climbing, they show improved aerobic capacity & an improvement in their ablity to stand, walk, jump & run. For all the above reasons, IFSC has started organising Paraclimbing World Championships since the past 2 years. In 2013, Mr. Mani was the World Champion from India.
